Georgia Music Magazine Review

October 2nd, 2007

“Aligned with Athens-based musicians, singer-songwriter Monroe ditched the confines of her former rock band, Umpteen, for a career in country music. There’s no residue of her past life here; this is about as straight forward as modern country gets. Her voice recalls Lucinda Williams or maybe Natalie Merchant, but with out the edgy distinction of the former or the plaintive wail of the latter.

Monroe’s songs are easygoing and solid, and while she doesn’t engage in the vocal theatrics or cornpone story-telling of many current country artists, there’s not a knockout hit lurking anywhere on this album either. Still, there’s credibility in her lack of pandering (“She Regrets her Tattoos”  is as close to trailer talk as it gets) and, when Monroe gets the vibe right (“Brand New Chapter of Life,”) there’s an undeniable sign that great country music doesn’t have to emanate from music row.” __John Davidson

Regretting Tattoos

June 27th, 2007

So, some of you may have heard my song “She Regrets Her Tattoos.” I was recently informed that the front page of the New York Times had this article about regretting tattoos: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/06/17/us/17tattoo.html?_r=1&hp&oref=slogin

Seems some people are getting their tattoos removed to make room for more tattoos. Maybe I should use my biology degree to go back to school to become a doctor that removes tattoos; I bet I’d make a killing! But in the mean time I think I might just go get another one.

ideas Welcome

May 31st, 2007

Soooo, I’ve been having a small case of song writing fever this season. I just finished one about drunk guys who can’t get it up. The hook for this one goes “you can never get up when it’s time to get down.” Another one is about sweet gals and the evil boys they pick up in bars and has the line “you’ve got the voice of an angel but the mind of the devil.” “Jail Bait” is about a cop who arrests a gal and ends up knocking her up. That last one’s a true story… well, so are the first two. As some of you may be aware, most of the songs on my CD “Ghost Town” were co-written by me, fester hagood, and my dad. A few were not written by me at all. I’ve been delving into my own writing. Hopefully you’ll like what you hear when it gets posted on the music page. My stuff so far is still country but has a slightly different feel. Some people have heard the new songs live and they say it’s more haunting. I’ll let you guys decide for yourselves later.

Anyways, enough about MY songs. I’m here asking for YOUR nitty gritty songwriting ideas… esp. from the lady perspective. Please be aware that I’m not against being uncouth… all ideas welcome

my first live internet performance!

May 25th, 2007

So, I performed live on www.thegaragebandnetwork.com last week. Once I figure out how to clip out parts of the DVD of the performance I’ll post them on youtube, myspace, and all that jazz. After mustering up the energy to actually watch the video this morning before work I found myself fast-forwarding through certain parts. The parts I could watch weren’t too bad. Keep a look-out for some clips!
